As it happens, I don't have a wisteria, shirl. Think it's too cold here for it to blossom. We had one for ten years, but it never flowered...that's why I was turning a shade of green at the beauty of yours :)
It's the same with hydrangeas, except the petiolaris which we have growing up the front of the house...they come into foliage, but no blooms. I've tried them in various parts of our garden to see if more shelter would help, but no...
Your photos are wonderful , not only of the wisteria but also of the mecanopsis. Congrats!
Hi again, Wildlife Gardener
I hadn’t realised it could be too cold for a wisteria to flower :-( It just goes to show even in the relatively small area of Scotland how plants will flower or not in different locations.
Thanks, I am really enjoying using my camera to capture the plants in my garden. When I have some ‘free’ time I should learn how to optimise the features on my camera and experiment a bit more with them!
Shirl, I've been thinking of adding another blog for plant identification. Mostly for my own benefit, so that I can better keep up with what I have. I like the format you are using here.
Hi again, Robin
Yes, I had hoped this would work when I had difficulty in choosing which photos to use when I had many that I liked.
Tonight I have just set up another version for my bird photos too and I have only noticed your comment now! I have changed the settings to allow me to receive emails when comments come in on both the supplemental photo blogs now.
I think this format could work for me - good luck with yours.
Hi shirl,
I have just purchased a Wisteria Sinensis from ebay and like you, live in Perthshire.
I fell in love with the beatiful trailing flower heads last may in a garden in Devon.
After buying i wondered if it would flourish this far north and was pleased to see your success.I will adopt some of your tips and hope it grows well along with blueberry bushes i am trying out.
Hi there, Rasper :-)
Delighted to hear from you and I wish you every success with flowers on your wisteria this year:-)
I was absolutely thrilled with mine last year - I had never had a show like that before! I do believe it depends on the rootstock of your plant as to when it will flower - sorry I had to wait for 8-9 years. My plant wasn’t grafted but yours may be. If it is I believe you could get flowers this year. However I also tried different pruning methods each year so perhaps I just got it right last year!
I have looked back my posts and see I should probably prune my wisteria this weekend. Thank-you I’m really glad you left this comment today :-D
You can read about the pruning of my wisteria last year and about how I thought feeding and watering helped too :-D
I would be very interested to see hear how yours does this year – please drop me a comment again in June :-D
Thanks for your reply shirl, if your interested, i can send you a piccy of the landscaping project i have undertaken of our back garden. Its at the hard landscaping level at the mo, but buying and deciding what the borders need is the stage i am.
cheers rasper
Hi again, Rasper :-)
You are most welcome!
I still need to get out in to my garden and get my wisteria pruned and a few other bits of planting done very soon. Yes, I would be very interested in seeing the pics of your project. I love to share in other people’s gardens especially when changes are being made :-D
It was brilliant to see you photo's of your wisteria. I moved to a brand you house 5 years ago and planted a wisteria on a south facing wall. Unfortunately, I think it did not like the windy area it was planted, so was moved to a south East facing wall away from the wind. It has not flowered yet, but has grown rapidly. Therefore, at the beginning of this year (possibly March on a sunny day) I pruned it back hard. From your photo's I guess the flowers are rounded, and I think I have some of them coming, it is now 18th April, do they come before the leaves??? The rest of the plant looks like it is not doing anything - will the leaves come soon? From a very keen beginner!
